Important Notice: Apology and notification regarding potential leakage of customer data and delivery of messages leading to phishing sites due to possible unauthorized access to the Booking.com management system

2023.10.5

It has been confirmed that there was unauthorized access by a malicious third party of the accommodation reservation information management system (hereinafter the “management system”) operated by Booking.com that is used at Best Western Hotel Fino Tokyo Akihabara and that messages leading to phishing sites were sent to some customers who made reservations at the hotel through the management system. It has also been confirmed that due to this unauthorized access there is a high possibility that the personal information of customers registered in the Booking.com system was in a state that was viewable by the third party.
An investigation is currently being conducted to ascertain further details of the incident. We would like to take this opportunity to deeply apologize for any inconvenience and concern caused to our customers.

1. Background and Summary
Late on the night of September 20, 2023, Japan time, when the hotel staff accessed the Booking.com management system it was confirmed that messages had been sent through the chat function of the management system that were unintended by the hotel (messages stating that reservations would be cancelled unless credit card information was input and that had an attached URL link leading to a phishing site).
In response, the hotel immediately changed the login password for the management system. In addition, on the morning of September 21, we consulted with Booking.com and deleted the accounts within the management system to block access to the system and suspended acceptance of new accommodation reservations through Booking.com.
In view of the unauthorized access of the management system, we have learned that the personal information of customers registered in the management system may possibly have been viewed by third parties. However, leakage of customers’ personal information has not been confirmed at this point in time.

2. Customer Personal Information That May Have Been Viewed
Customer information that may possibly have been available for viewing in the management system is listed below.
・Name
・Address
・Telephone number
・Nationality
・Date of accommodation
* We have requested Booking.com to investigate whether there is a possibility that credit card information was available for viewing.

3. Cause
Regarding the cause, we have requested Booking.com to investigate the incident and the hotel is also conducting an investigation. As soon as the cause is determined, we will disclose the information on the hotel’s website.

4. Presence or Absence of Secondary Damage and its Content
Accessing the phishing site attached to messages that were fraudulently sent through the management system may possibly result in extraction and illicit use of credit card information. The hotel does not utilize e-mail or the chat function of accommodation booking websites to request credit card information or payment from customers who have made reservations with the hotel. Please refrain from accessing any links attached to messages of this sort that are sent to you.

5. Future Action
As soon as the cause and details of the damage are determined, we will disclose the information on the hotel’s website. We will also provide the necessary cooperation including consulting with investigative authorities and filing damage reports.

6. Contact Information
Please contact Booking.com Customer Support or directly contact the hotel (Telephone number: 03-5816-3151, e-mail address: info2-akihabara@hm.saison-realty.co.jp).

We deeply apologize again for the inconvenience and concern caused to you on this occasion.
