Important Notice: Apology and notification regarding potential leakage of customer data and delivery of messages leading to phishing sites due to possible unauthorized access to the Booking.com management system

2024.7.2

It has been confirmed that there was unauthorized access by a malicious third party of the accommodation reservation information management system (hereinafter the “management system”) operated by Booking.com that is used at Best Western Hotel Fino Tokyo Akihabara and that messages leading to phishing sites were sent to some customers who made reservations at the hotel through the management system. It has also been confirmed that due to this unauthorized access there is a possibility that the personal information of customers registered in the Booking.com system was in a state that was viewable by the third party.
An investigation is currently being conducted to ascertain further details of the incident. We would like to take this opportunity to deeply apologize for any inconvenience and concern caused to our customers.

1. Background and Summary

On the evening of June 29, 2024 (Japan Standard Time), a guest informed us that Booking.com had sent a message (with a confirmation request and a URL link to a phishing site to prevent the cancellation of a reservation).
Upon review, our staff confirmed that a third party was distributing these messages through the chat function in the booking.com management system, which was not intended by the hotel.
In response, the hotel immediately changed the login password for the management system and stopped accepting new room reservations through booking.com.

In addition, the management system has been subject to unauthorized access, and it is possible that customers’ personal information registered in the management system has been viewed by a third party; however, no leakage of customers’ personal information has been confirmed at this point in time.

2. Customer Personal Information That May Have Been Viewed

Customer information that may possibly have been available for viewing in the management system is listed below.
・Name
・Address
・Telephone number
・Nationality
・Date of accommodation
* We have requested Booking.com to investigate whether there is a possibility that credit card information was available for viewing.

3. Cause

It was determined that the cause of the unauthorized access to the management system was due to an infection of the hotel’s terminal by malware.

4. Presence or Absence of Secondary Damage and its Content

Accessing the phishing site attached to messages that were fraudulently sent through the management system may possibly result in extraction and illicit use of credit card information. The hotel does not utilize e-mail or the chat function of accommodation booking websites to request credit card information or payment from customers who have made reservations with the hotel. Please refrain from accessing any links attached to messages of this sort that are sent to you.

5. Future Action

As soon as the details of the damage are determined, we will disclose the information on the hotel’s website. We will also provide the necessary cooperation including consulting with investigative authorities.

6. Contact Information

Please contact Booking.com Customer Support or directly contact the hotel (Telephone number: 03-5816-3151, e-mail address: info2-akihabara@hm.saison-realty.co.jp).

We deeply apologize again for the inconvenience and concern caused to you on this occasion.
